Pre- internet

Major Labels dominate: marketing/ promo/ distribution ( gatekeepers  ‘taste’)

 

Marketing promotion to British audiences:

Newspapers, music mags, posters and TV (TOTP- music videos) Playlists on the radio.

 

Independent Labels:

John Peel- Radio 1, pirate raido, fanzines. John Peel- Willing to play independent music

POST INTERNET

  • New business  model
  • The long tail
  • International global reach
  • Blogs reach local
  • Online Virtual communities
  • High street record shops (HMV)& independent record shops are closing down
  • More live gigs and festivals- targeting British audience
  • Still use some old practices
